When I returned, I immediately began researching the possibility of moving from Los Angeles to New York. I was amazed by the potential benefits and incentives of corporate relocation to New York. The business opportunities provided by being so close to so many communications businesses and companies that outsource their phone support to call centers lead me to make a final decision. I sat down with important employees in my call center business to let them know that I wanted to move the company to New York. It was important to prepare my key employees for corporate relocation, but the work was not done yet.  

I made sure all of my key personnel had input into the cross-continental move. This was to make sure my most important employees were tuned into the process and to ensure that the move was done wisely. For example, the head of accounting crunched all of the numbers to make sure corporate relocation to New York was financially responsible. The operations director made sure the move stayed on budget and the human resources director made sure we would have sufficient staffing at our new location. I asked my former partner for a reputable real estate agent that would be skilled at handling corporate relocation. Using that lead, I found office space in Manhattan within our price range that was exactly what we needed, with enough room for moderate expansion. When we finally made the move, I hired a consulting company to handle the process of becoming a New York State corporation and selling our previous Los Angeles property.

My call center business has thrived since making the move from Los Angeles to New York. I have been able to make numerous new business connections, including gaining several new clients. There are plenty of qualified applicants to fill the jobs that I provide. I have also become fond of the New York corporate style and the East Coast lifestyle. I could not be happier that I made the move.

International Moving

Do you throw wet clothing and towels on the floor and leave them there?  Or even worse, throw dry clothing on top of them and forget the wet clothes are underneath?  If this is a habit for you or the rest of your family, especially if the floor you are putting these on is carpeted, then you are inviting mold to start growing in your house.  Wash wet clothing as soon as possible or put them in a sink or other container by themselves and never put dry clothing on top of wet. 

Has your home suffered water damage due to floods or heavy rain?  Mold likes to grow on items that have been wet and forgotten about or just never repaired.  It will grow anywhere that there is moisture or high amounts of humidity.  Stachybotrys mold in particular likes to grow where there is standing water, such as in a leaky area of your basement.  Try to keep the humidity level in your house down and if you see condensation on your windows or on exposed pipes, you are not succeeding in this.  Try a de-humidifier. 

Any part of your home that has been water damaged, especially floors and walls, could be hiding a mold infestation.  To detect mold that you cannot see or smell, purchase a mold testing kit and follow the directions for it exactly as they appear or the test will be useless.

Mold will also grow in closets that have too many clothes packed in them.  Air simply cannot circulate in a closet packed too tight and the clothing provides all the food that the mold needs to survive.  A solution to this problem is to just give or throw away clothing that you do not need and if there is not much clothing that you do not use, find another way to store it.

Mold is a fungus and it exists all around us.  There are thousands of different species of it and they exist all around the world in more colors than you can think of.  Some people seem to think that the words “mold” and “fungus” can be used as replacements for each other, but this is not always the case.  All molds are fungi, but not every fungus is a mold.  We have been known to eat different fungi around the world such as mushrooms and some kinds of mold have even been used to create such foods as cheese or alcoholic beverages and the fact is that some molds, when used in the creation of food or medicines properly, can be quite beneficial to our health.

The news has been making a big deal over mold the past few years, noting “toxic black mold” in many of its broadcasts.  The black mold that it is usually referring to is called Stachybotrys and this is a genus of mold that contains about 10 different species.  It grows mostly on dead plants and has been known to grow in homes or businesses.  Not every kind of black mold mentioned on the news is Stachybotrys. 

People are becoming more and more concerned about hidden mold in their homes and businesses.  This is mold that you cannot readily see just by taking a look around your house and is often found tucked away inside air conditioning vents or inside walls.  Any mold that has been found to be growing inside the ventilation system should be gotten rid of as soon as possible because every time the air conditioner is turned on, the mold is spread to every corner of your home or business and will be creating health problems for everyone in it.

Mycotoxins are what make some molds so dangerous.  These are produced by some molds is what makes the molds dangerous, it is not just the existence of the mold by itself.  If a mold does not produce mycotoxins, it is not a significant danger to human health, only the structural health of some buildings that it grows in.

Using a wet vacuum is one method that can be used.  These are vacuum cleaners that are specially designed to collect liquids from a hardwood floor, concrete, carpet, and etcetera.  Any surface where water has started to accumulate and simply stand is where these vacuums can be used.  They should not be used on porous materials, however, like gypsum boards.  Use them only when the area is still wet, because it might spread mold spores if it is not sufficient.  Clean and dry the equipment after each use, since mold and its spores can stick to these surfaces. 

Using a damp cloth to wipe mold away from nonporous surfaces such as a countertop or a vinyl floor can be effective in getting rid of mold, but using mold killing chemicals is essential.  Dry these surfaces as quickly as you can after you finish so that mold does not re-start growing in the area that you just finished cleaning.  The instructions for any mold and fungus killing chemicals should be followed completely and if you have any porous materials that have become contaminated with mold, you will want to throw these away.  Mold can usually not be completely removed from these items.

A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is something that you should invest in whether you are a homeowner or someone who rents a building.  Even if you do not suspect mold contamination, this will help keep the air in your home cleaner.  When used after cleaning up mold, it will collect the mold spores and will not redistribute them into the air.  After being used to clean up after a mold removal, the filter and the contents of the vacuum need to be disposed of in some well-sealed plastic bags.  Always wear a respirator and gloves when handling this material and do not let it get on your skin.  Avoid stirring up the contents of the vacuum.

How does it get into your building? It usually comes from outdoors, either due to water leaking into the house from outside or because the humidity in a home is too high. Areas with water damage such as roofs, flooded areas, crawl spaces, and plumbing leaks are often sites for mold infections.

Why should you worry about it? Aside from the health complications that some molds can cause, it has been known to grow on furniture, clothing stuffed into the backs of closets, and even children’s toys. All these items need to be cleaned thoroughly and sterilized before being used again, if they’re used again at all. Some items like clothing are easier to throw away than they are to clean. The structural damage that mold can cause to your home overtime can be substantial and as soon as you discover a mold infestation, it’s best to either call in a professional to get rid of it or, if it’s a smaller infection, remove the mold and clean the area yourself using the different testing and cleaning kits that are available on the market today.

Who should worry about mold the most? The people who are most affected by mold in their homes or places of business are infants and small children, the elderly, people with respiratory conditions such as asthma or emphysema, anyone with a weakened immune system, such as people with HIV or AIDS, chemotherapy patients, anyone who has just had surgery, and pregnant women.

How do you prevent mold? The easiest way to prevent mold is to make sure your home is a cool and dry environment. Bathrooms and kitchens should be paid special attention to. Clean up spills and leaking water quickly and do not allow standing water in any part of your home, even the basement, because the infestation can and will spread to other areas of your home. Do your best to direct heat and moisture from clothes dryers, dish washers, stoves, and bathrooms outside your home with the appropriate fans and vents.
