Treating Social Anxiety

October 8th, 2008 by admin

The methodology behind treating social anxiety has evolved a lot in recent years. Rather than viewing people as “sick” or “freaks”, treatment is involved that can rehabilitate the individual and improve their quality of life drastically.

The first, and best, way of treating social anxiety is psychological treatment. Generally the most effective for those with minor symptoms, psychological treatment involves cognitive behavioral therapy, or cognitive group behavioral therapy. This type of therapy is viewed as supportive and positive, with great results. Reinforcement of ideas this way can lead to honest, long-term results.

Those with more severe cases may want to consider medication treatment. Many doctors use the monotherapy method, meaning they only administer one drug at a time for patients. However, recent research suggests that two or more medications together will do a better job. Complement this with behavioral therapy, and the results become quite impressive in most cases. Unfortunately, due to the lack of experience of many doctors, one drug therapy is continued to be used to this day.

If you think you are suffering from a social anxiety disorder, contact a doctor immediately and start treatment easy and slow – to keep you comfortable and feeling in control of your life again!
