What Are Managed Futures?

August 22nd, 2008 by admin

The term-managed futures refer to a 30-year-old industry made up of professional money managers known as commodity trading advisors (CTAs). CTAs are under a requirement to register with the U.S. government’s Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) before they can offer themselves to the public as a money manager. CTAs are also required to go through an FBI deep background check, and will be required to provide rigorous disclosure documents (and independent audits of financial statements every year), which will be reviewed by the National Futures Association (NFA), a self-regulatory watchdog organization.

Managed futures are futures positions entered into by professional money managers, also known as commodity trading advisors, on behalf of private investors. Managers will invest in energy, agriculture and currency markets (among other things) using futures contracts and will determine their positions based on an expected profit potential.

A managed futures contract is simply a financial contract obligating a buyer to purchase an asset (or a seller to sell an asset), such as a physical commodity or say a financial instrument, at a pre-determined future date and set price. Futures contracts will detail the quality and the quantity of the underlying asset and will be standardized to facilitate trading on a futures exchange market.

The potential benefits of a managed future are that the investments can help diversify your portfolio and, under some conditions, minimize the risk. For example, if you are investing in currencies abroad may mitigate some domestic risk. Managed futures can also help the individual to profit or at the minimum to minimize risk during periods of slower economic growth.

It is important to remember there can be potential downside in that futures investments are not guaranteed and they may be very volatile. There can also be the possibility of human error due to a manager (human) being involved. In other words, if the commodity-trading advisor makes an error it can definitely cost the investor a bundle of money. However, on the other side it could make the investor a bundle as well.  I do not think I would want to take that chance though.

Finally, there can be some suitability issues as well. A minimum net worth of $150,000 (not counting your home and other items) can be necessary for an investment. There could also be some minimum income requirements as well.

Arranging A Children’s Party With Entertainers

August 10th, 2008 by admin

Kids’ parties can be memorable experiences for everyone involved. Nothing puts a smile on a parent’s face more than watching their son or daughter have the time of their life with their friends. Imagine how much more fun your child would have if there was a magician or clown there to keep the kids’ attention for an hour or two? Hiring a children’s party entertainer can add something extra to a child’s party, but how do you go about arranging one?

First, ask around. If your friends or family have ever hired a children’s party entertainer, you should talk to them about their experience. Like any business, referrals are the strongest method of marketing, and you should take full advantage of that. Talk to them about who they hired: how much did it cost, what did the entertainer do, how did the kids enjoy it, etc. Getting that kind of information ahead of time can really benefit you in making your decision.

If you don’t know anyone who has hired a children’s party entertainer, then you may want to talk to an agency. Having an agency provide your entertainer can mean that you might pay a little more, but you will get a professional entertainer who knows the ins and outs of the craft – and generally will be more reliable. On top of that, if your children’s party entertainer falls ill, and agency can make sure a suitable replacement is provided.

When choosing entertainment, make sure you factor in just how many kids will be there, and their ages. Kids that are older than 10 will most likely not want a clown. If there are a lot of kids, you may want to hire two or more entertainers to work the crowd. Talk with the entertainer ahead of time and arrange some sort of goodie bag or souvenir for the kids to take home as a great reminder of the fun they had.

Make sure you get a contract or letter detailing the scope of the job and description, along with payment details and a cancellation policy. Covering those details may help you avoid some headaches later if there is confusion.

By providing a children’s party entertainer, you add a little more magic to a party that a child will remember for many years to come.

Ripe for the picking

August 6th, 2008 by admin

Few things smell or taste better than plump fruit picked at the peak of perfection. So why not give the gift of good taste? These days, there are countless varieties of exotic and otherwise delicious fruits that are grown specifically to wow their lucky recipients: head-sized pears, hand-shaped lemons and even “star fruit.” In winter or in summer, a basket of fresh ripe fruit is sure to impress and delight.

Why give fresh fruit gift baskets? First, fruit is highly symbolic. Trees bare fruit just as parents bare progeny. Moreover, they are often associated with seduction, taking a page from Genesis – all of sin for an apple, if you remember. And last, since fruit are not only the product of trees but also themselves contain the seed for future trees, they are symbolic of children and parenting in one. Giving fruit can be considered the most thoughtful and symbolic gesture if it is given as a gift of congratulations (as congratulations mark the birth of something new), a gift celebrating a newborn, wedding, or engagement, or as a get well gift since fruit contains within it the nourishment to return to health. But the gift of fruit goes further than symbolism – it is just down right delicious. That’s why I often find myself giving fruit as a thank you gift, a housewarming gift, or a “just because” gift.

It used to be that you had to live in sunny California or Florida to give fruit that anyone cared about – unless you lived in New York or Georgia and could give apples or peaches. But these days, you don’t need to live next to the orchard or grove in order to give the gift of great-tasting fruit year round. Online gift basket companies put together some of the best fruit gift baskets I have ever seen. Filled with rare fruits like calamansi, buddha’s hands, Muscat grapes, and perfect peaches these baskets will impress not only with the quantity of rare fruits but also with the quality, as these companies pay a pretty penny to get their pick of the crop.

A word of advice: if you are looking to give the gift of fruit, order your gift basket from a company that specializes in gift baskets and not necessarily straight from the orchard. Though you’ll pay a premium, the recipient of your gift will appreciate it all the more. Gift basket companies are experts when it comes to arranging, packing, and shipping your fruit so that it is beautiful and perfectly fresh and ripe when it arrives to its destination, whereas groves or orchards really only specialize in growing fruit.
